Congress excursions

In the north of Brno begins the largest and the most important karst area in the Czech Republic –  the Moravian Karst with more than 1,200 caves.

The history of the exploration of the Moravian Karst is dated back more than 250 years. In 1723, a descent of the Minorite monk Lazarus Schopper to the deep of the Macocha Abyss was reported. The first scientifical explorations were performed by the physicist Johannes Nagel who described known halls and tunnels of the contemporary Sloupsko-Šošůvské Caves and discovered their lower level in 1748. From this time, many discoveries were reached in the area of the karst, not only speleological, but also paleontological and archeological, including the longest cave of the Czech Republic – the system Amatérská jeskynĕ (The Cave of Amateurs, i.e. cave of voluntary cavers), with its length of more than 30km, which is not the final number.

There will be organized Wednesday congress excursions, as well as pre– and post– Congress camps. Some caves will be open for excursions during the congress.
